The Cathedral of the Saints Translators of Marseilles, also known as the Church of Saint-Sahak and Saint-Mesrob with reference to Sahak le Parthe and Mesrop Machtots, is a religious building of the Armenian Apostolic Church located in the 8th arrondissement of Marseilles.
History: The first stone of the building was blessed on February 22, 1928 by Monsignor Krikor Balakian. Three years later, on October 25, 1931, the cathedral was consecrated (also by Krikor Balakian). The architect of the cathedral is Aram Tahtajian who took an example on the structure of St.Echmiadzin Cathedral. Financing for the operation was largely provided by Brussels businessman Vahan Khorassandjan. From 1986 to 2000, Garabed Sayabalian was secretary general of the cathedral council. On October 2, 2018, the cathedral gathered for the death of Charles Aznavour.
Description: Besides the architectural work of Aram Tahtajian, we can mention the sculptures of bas-reliefs made by Pierre Verguert or the paintings of the tympanum, the transept and the choir made by the Belgian painter Jos de Smett.
