The Vélodrome Stadium, also known as Orange Vélodrome by contract of naming since June 2016, is a sports venue located in the 8th arrondissement of Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône), within the district of Saint-Giniez. Main sports equipment of the city and second stadium of France in capacity, the Vélodrome is used by the football club of Olympique de Marseille since its inauguration in 1937. Initially of 35,000 places, the stadium hosts, in addition to football, cycling races (the velodrome will be abolished in the 1980s), rugby to XIII (meetings of the team of France and Marseille XIII, club created by Paul Ricard in 1946), matches of the XV of France that lost there only twice, as well as some final matches of the French Rugby Championship at XV and RC Toulon, not forgetting large-scale concerts.
The stadium has several extensions during the 20th century. For the 1998 World Cup, the compound is increased to 60,000 seats and its roof is removed. It is restored in view of the 2016 European Football Championship, with a capacity increased to 67,394 spectators.
