About

The Grenoble Speed Ring built in 1966 is an ice ring created for the 1968 Olympic Winter Games and located in the Paul-Mistral Park, not far from Grenoble City Hall and the Clemenceau Hall. It was inaugurated by the mayor of Grenoble, Hubert Dubedout, on 23 December 1966.

The speed ring was built outside, on a concrete slab refrigerated by more than 125 km of tube fed by a refrigeration plant by direct ammonia release. The stands are also made of concrete and provide space for the Olympic Games (offices, changing rooms, infirmary, bar and refrigeration facilities) as well as 2,500 seats. The loop is 350 m, at the rope and 400 m at the central line for a runway width of 14 m. The regulatory runway consists of two straight lines of 111.945 metres, complemented to the south by a training track of 111 metres by 30, creating a total skate area of 8,970 m2. Ice is cooled to -7 °C and requires 2,500 000 to 3,000,000 refrigerators per hour.
