About

The Charles-Berty Stadium, originally called the Grenoble Municipal Stadium or the Grenoble Velodrome Stadium, was inaugurated on Sunday 14 June 1936 on the occasion of the Youth Festival, a month before hosting its first major sporting event, the finish on 14 July of the 7th stage of the Tour de France 1936 won by Dutchman Theofiel Middelkamp. Located in the Parc Paul-Mistral, it has a capacity of 15,000 seats at its opening but the historian and archivist Vital Chomel speaks of 18,000 places in his book on the history of Grenoble and the press speaks about nearly 20,000 people for the arrival of the Tour de France 1936. It served mainly as a football stadium for the city of Grenoble.
