About

A statue of Johannes Gutenberg dating from 1840, made by artist David d'Angers, is installed on Gutenberg Square in Strasbourg. Four centuries after the birth of the printing press thanks to the invention of Gutenberg, who lived in Strasbourg from 1439 to 1444, this statue of the German printer was inaugurated with delight. Made free by the French romantic sculptor, it had been requested by the Strasbourg printers.

They claim that it was in Strasbourg that Gutenberg developed the composition system in moving characters, even though it was back in his hometown, Mainz, which he would print from 1452 to 1455 the famous 42-line Bible: 180 copies, of which 48 still exist today. The famous inventor is represented holding a scroll with the inscription "and the light was." The bronze statue is 3.31 metres high.
