fort du Questel
The Fort du Questel is a "dread" located in Brest. It is a fortified structure of the type Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban, closed and square in shape, whose entrance or gorge is placed on the least exposed side. This vast 100-metre quadrilateral is located between Fort Keranroux (1.5 km south) and Fort Penfeld (1 km northeast).
The fort of Questel monitors the cross of the valleys of the Moulin du Buis where the enemy could settle to bomb the city and the port of Brest. Surrounded by deep ditches and accessible by a drawbridge, it consists of a masonry wall (escarp), topped by a round road for Musketeers. This road itself is dominated by a rampart of land, in retreat, intended to support artillery (26 guns in total, bringing to 4.5 km).
The garrison in place, about 200 men, had access to various galleries, including two large underground tunnels that connect the central courtyard to the round roads. It is also worth noting the presence of places of ease, which, at the time of Vauban, remained a privilege. Built on a six-hectare site, the Questel Fort dominates the Allegoet Valley, a tributary of the Penfeld River.
