église Saint-Maximin de Saint-Maximin
Saint-Maximin Church is a parish Catholic church located in Saint-Maximin, France. It is a building of great complexity, which has been built in several stages, and experienced some changes. Its oldest parts date back to the last quarter of the 11th century.
It is the western gate of the nave, with rudimentary decoration, and the two-storey bell tower of bays, which is quite representative of its time. Most of the bays on the first floor unfortunately disappeared, and those on the second floor were redone in the 15th century. The stone arrow was added in the mid-12th century.
The nave, whose large arcades were pierced at the same time, is without character, and the base of the bell tower and the eastern parts lost some of their authenticity during a restoration in the 19th century. The arch vault under the bell tower, however, dates back to its origin, as well as an archaic tailloir engraved with broken lines. The most interesting part inside the church is the small choir of the 1170s, whose capitals with simple motifs still remind the late Romanesque period.
